Dry storage
All timber sold as ‘kiln dried’ in the UK has been put through a kiln to an adequately low moisture content, but much of it is then allowed to sit out in a damp atmosphere soaking up the moisture. At Lanarkshire Hardwoods all timber is stored after kilning in a fully weather-proof, heated and de-humidified building, maintaining the essential low moisture content of the wood.

Re-planting / Girdwoodend Woodlands
Patrick Baxter has been creating a new woodland at Girdwoodend since 1992 and has now planted some 10,000 trees, including Birch, Scots Pine, Juniper, Ash, Oak, Wild & Bird Cherry, Crab Apple, Willows, Alder, Hazel, Rowan, Whitebeam, Maple, Sycamore, Hawthorn, Blackthorn, Beech, Holly, Walnut, Aspen and Lime. Approximately 300 more are being planted each winter.

The woodlands have been laid out for amenity, with attractive woodland paths winding through the young trees. Customers are most welcome to take a walk (please feel welcome to bring your dogs) through the woodlands during their visit. Longer walks can be undertaken through the neighbouring farmland which has recently been planted with forestry and laid out with paths & signage for the public to enjoy. This is all within walking distance of Girdwoodend.

Cabinet-making / general woodworking advice

Patrick Baxter travelled down to Herefordshire to train as a cabinetmaker & antique restorer between 1988 & 1991, set up the furniture business at Girdwoodend in 1992 and has continued to build on his experience by undertaking a wide variety of unusual and challenging projects over the years. Experience has been gained in all aspects of traditional cabinet-making, from joints and construction, woodturning, carving and inlay work to traditional finishing including french polishing.

Although not at present offering tuition or courses, Patrick is always happy to give brief free advice to woodworkers and home improvers who are Lanarkshire Hardwoods customers looking for constructional or design ideas.

Having personally worked with all the woods being sold for so long, Patrick is in a unique position to be able to advise which timber would be most suited for your purpose.
